While Cherry Festival setup weekend kept North East bustling with activity, members of Fuller Hose Company #1 took a meaningful pause from the festivities on Sunday afternoon to honor a hero close to our hearts—Shawn Giles, a beloved member of our department who was tragically killed in the line of duty on August 20, 2023, while directing traffic on Route 20 in North East Township.
To keep Shawn’s legacy alive and support an important cause, Shooters Warehouse hosted the Bikes and BBQ Benefit, with partial proceeds dedicated to the Shawn Giles Memorial Fund. Adele Giles, Shawn’s wife, along with members of the department, spent the afternoon connecting with the community, sharing stories, and expressing heartfelt thanks for the continued love and support.
As the grills sizzled and bikes lined up in support, the generosity of the day came full circle. At the close of the event, Shooters Warehouse presented a $2,500 donation to the Memorial Fund. These funds directly support roadway safety initiatives that aim to protect first responders, law enforcement, tow truck drivers, and Good Samaritans who risk their lives on the roadside.
“Our mission is to assist in protecting first responders, law enforcement, roadway workers, tow truck drivers and anyone who pulls over to help a fellow motorist,” said Adele Burnett Giles, who continues to champion Shawn’s legacy through advocacy and community action.
The day’s heat wasn’t just from the BBQ. As the event was winding down, crews were called to action when a brush fire ignited along the railroad tracks, likely sparked by a passing train. Fuller’s Brush 216 quickly responded, containing and extinguishing the 50’ x 20’ fire before it could spread further. The swift response was a reminder of the dedication and readiness that defines our department—even on days of remembrance.
We extend our deepest thanks to the event organizers, Adele, and the entire crew at Shooters Warehouse for their generosity, hospitality, and unwavering support of our mission and our members.
As we continue to honor Shawn’s life and service, we invite the community to join us again for the 2nd Annual Shawn Giles Memorial Walk, scheduled for Sunday, August 17, 2025, at Gravel Pit Park. Full event details will be shared in the coming weeks.
