NEFD Participates in Mock Multiagency Emergency Response at Welch’s

Tonight’s drill provided a valuable and unique training opportunity for the North East Fire Department (NEFD) as crews partnered with the Erie County Hazmat Team for a large-scale mock emergency at Welch’s.

The scenario simulated an ammonia leak with a report of a patient down on the roof of the facility. Chief 200 (DiOrazio) arrived on scene and completed a size-up based on initial reports from Welch’s staff. Ladder 209 was first to arrive and quickly deployed its aerial ladder. Upon making the roof, the crew located the patient and confirmed the presence of an active ammonia leak—promptly requesting additional resources.

Engine 204’s crew joined the operation on the roof and successfully rescued and removed the patient to a safe zone, where both the patient and responding personnel underwent full decontamination procedures.

During the evolution, Welch’s staff offered plant tours to NEFD and Hazmat personnel, providing valuable operational insight. Crews also practiced a variety of roof rescue techniques, strengthening inter-agency coordination and response capabilities.

Chief 200 (DiOrazio) served as Incident Commander, leading the unified effort across departments.
