North East, PA — Fuller Hose Company #1 has been installing free smoke detectors in local homes since partnering with the American Red Cross in January 2023. Through this ongoing collaboration, dozens of homes have been made safer for residents across the community.
Recently, National Fuel provided the American Red Cross with carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, allowing Fuller Hose Company #1 to now offer free CO alarm installation alongside smoke detectors for eligible households.
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and deadly gas produced by fuel-burning appliances such as furnaces, water heaters, stoves, generators, and vehicles. Because it cannot be detected by human senses, a working CO alarm is often the only warning before dangerous levels build up in a home.
Why Carbon Monoxide Alarms Are So Important
- CO can overcome people while they are sleeping, without warning
- Symptoms of CO poisoning can include headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and loss of consciousness
- Children, older adults, and pets are especially vulnerable
- Properly installed CO alarms can provide early warning and save lives
CO alarms are recommended on every level of a home and near sleeping areas, especially in residences with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages.
“Carbon monoxide is one of the most dangerous hazards we face in the home because you can’t see it or smell it,” said Chris Skrekla, Captain of Fuller Hose Company #1. “These alarms give families precious time to get out safely and call for help. If we can prevent even one tragedy by installing them, it’s absolutely worth it.”
